Welcome Fall, Y’all!: Easy Tips on Prepping Your Home for Autumn

Mollie Surratt

Grab a pumpkin spice latte, slice of pumpkin bread, turn on Hocus Pocus, and let’s chat fall décor. Heck, while you’re at it, also light that new pumpkin spice candle. Fall is absolutely my favorite time of year for so many reasons. Whether it’s the crisp air, gorgeous leaves, pots of chili, or cozy family evenings by the fire pit, I’m so excited that the season of splendor is finally around the corner.

Every year in mid-September, I’m ready to begin to incorporate fall décor, including touches of Halloween décor, into my home. I like to bring in a mixture of treasured items from years past, sweet art projects from the kiddos, and locally available fresh fall foliage and pumpkins. To help you get a head start on your own fall décor, I’ve compiled a list of easy tips on prepping your home for autumn.

Tip #1: Bring the Outdoors In

The beauty that nature provides us during the fall is also stylish, affordable décor for our homes. Apples, pumpkins, branches and dried leaves are all gorgeous natural design elements. I love to fill dough bowls with small pumpkins for a chic, simple centerpiece. Add a burlap table runner under the dough bowl for a rustic detail that will last through Thanksgiving.

Tip #2: Create the Perfect Fall Entryway

Nothing says “welcome fall” quite like a fall entryway. A fresh welcome mat from Mohawk Home is a great way to kick off the new season. I’m starting my fall entryway this year by showcasing a new Mohawk Home Painted Pumpkins Welcome Mat, my favorite outdoor lanterns, and oversized ceramic pumpkin. In the coming weeks, I’ll also be adding mums, large pumpkins, and corn stalks as they become available from our local nursery. Don’t be afraid to layer the entryway space to create richness and dimension.

Tip #3: Incorporate Touches of Halloween

Like most kiddos, my girls love Halloween. I corporate Halloween décor in with my fall décor, so that it’s easy to put away when Halloween is over. Once the Halloween décor is put away, I just add a few turkey-themed elements in with the existing fall décor, like this rustic Give Thanks banner, for the Thanksgiving season.

Tip #4: Embrace Plaid This Season

Plaid is everywhere, in both fashion and interior design. Add an instant infusion of warmth by artfully tossing plaid throw blankets across sofas, chairs, and ottomans. Also, bring plaid into your table scape with napkins and placemats. The best part is that your plaids don’t have to match as long as they complement each other.

Tip #5: Cozy Fall Accents

Load up on candles in all of your favorite fall scents for an instant hygge factor. I’m loving my new soy pumpkin spice candle. Display firewood in a rustic bucket near the fireplace and create artful stacks of books around your living space so snuggling up with a good read is easy. And don’t forget fun pumpkin spice coffee mugs.

I hope these simple tips inspire you to spruce up your own home for the upcoming fall and Halloween season. We can’t wait to see what you create. Please share your fall entryways and décor with us on Instagram using #mohawkhome. Happy Fall, y’all!
