Non-Traditional Holiday Color Combinations to Try

Alyssa Cole

I dare you—no, I double-dog dare you—to shake things up this holiday season. I’m calling all red and green traditionalists to deck their home’s halls in ANYTHING but red and green. I know, I know…testing out a modern holiday color palette sounds scary at first, but you might be surprised how much you love stepping outside your Christmas-colored comfort zone.

Check out these stunning non-traditional holiday color combinations:

Rustic and Natural (Earth Tones)

Seen together in nature, green and brown are a striking duo, exuding a rustic, woodsy feel. Decorate your tree in soft, neutral tones with touches of sparkle. Ditch the traditional treeskirt in exchange for a woven brown basket.

All that Glitters (Indigo and Gold)

Timeless and sophisticated, take your holiday home decor to the next level by pairing  moody indigo with glamorous gold. Offset elegant glass and metal finishes with soft and natural textures to keep your look soft and balanced.

Simply Blushing (Blush, Rose, Mauve or Millennial Pink)

Laura and Duke Manor Farm defied tradition (and her children) when she used a combination of blush and navy blue in her holiday farmhouse for a soft, feminine combination. Ultimately, the kids convinced their mom to bring back traditional red and green hues, but the blush was absolutely beautiful while it lasted!

Modern Eye Candy (Pink, Aqua, Mustard and more!)

We can’t get enough of Sarah Schneider’s festive medley of modern colors in her holiday home. She mixed textures, a range of pop-art hues and just the right amount of metallic accents to leave us feeling like we are looking at a winter wonderland.

Blue Christmas (Aqua + Ivory + Gray)

Aqua and blues aren’t typically what you’d think of when getting your home ready for the holidays, but one of the bloggers from the Mohawk Holiday Home tour took a leap of faith and absolutely blew us away with her results! With all the color and movement of the Mohawk Heirloom Aqua Seti rug, she balanced the rest of the room with muted tones and brought the outdoors inside with the dashing Eucalyptus branches. At her blog, Twelve on Main, Sara describes just how many ways there are to keep things fun and fresh each season.
